I’ll bet the day you hired on your hiring manager shook your hand and welcomed you to FedEx. When that manager extended his or her hand, they were representing none other than Mr. Fred Smith. I was taught that a person’s handshake is their bond of honor. I’ll bet that you were taught this too.

Good news! Language in the FAA Reauthorization Bill that would make it easier for all of us at FedEx Express to form a union remains intact! The bill, H.R.915, was passed today (March 5) by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the amendment clarifying which labor laws FedEx Express workers should be under—the Express Carrier Employee Protection Act—is in there. This Thursday, the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T & I) Committee, will be moving forward on changes to the FAA Reauthorization Bill. Representative Steve Cohen is expected to propose an amendment that will strike the Express Carrier Employee Protection Act from the bill. General President Hoffa has written a letter to the committee’s chairman and ranking member asking them to vote AGAINST Cohen’s amendment.
Hoffa asks that the committee support the Express Carrier Protection Act, which will properly classify FedEx Express workers and place them under the appropriate labor laws so they may exercise their right to organize and form a union.

Here are some eye-opening excerpts from FedEx’s 2008 annual report. Notice that the unionized pilots ratified a new contract guaranteeing signing bonuses and other perks. The company is trying to portray the pilots’ good fortune as being the rest of the workforce’s misfortune. They want us to think like that so we make the unionized pilots the bad guys. But the pilots are not the bad guys, and because they are unionized, they’ve gotten themselves a great, guaranteed contract. Isn’t that what we all want and deserve?
